Called Sagittarius A*, that black hole is relatively puny compared to M87, containing the mass of just four million suns. The Event Horizon Telescope initially set out to snag an image of the supermassive black hole at the core of our galaxy, the Milky Way. Photograph by NASA and the Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA) Orange on the moon In this Hubble image, the blue jet contrasts with the yellow glow from the combined light of M87's stars and star clusters. The center of M87 glows with a gargantuan cosmic searchlight: a black-hole-powered jet of subatomic particles traveling at nearly the speed of light. “Nature has conspired to let us see something we thought was invisible.” “It’s truly remarkable, it’s almost humbling in a certain way,” Doeleman says. The data also offer some hints about how some supermassive black holes manage to unleash gargantuan jets of particles traveling at near light-speed. One of the chief takeaways is a more direct calculation of the black hole’s mass, which tracks closely with estimates derived from the motion of orbiting stars. Six papers published today in the Astrophysical Journal Lettersdescribe the observational tour de force, the process of achieving it, and the details that the image reveals. “What you are seeing is evidence of an event horizon … we now have visual evidence of a black hole.” “We are delighted to be able to report to you today that we have seen what we thought was unseeable,” added project director Shep Doeleman of the Harvard-Smithsonian Institute for Astrophysics. “We’ve been studying black holes for so long that sometimes it’s easy to forget that none of us has ever seen one,” National Science Foundation director France Cordova said today during a press conference announcing the team’s achievement, held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

More and more apps will allow you to customize the dark mode from within the app itself. Not conducive to low light environments at all. The light reading pane in Dark Mode really aggravates me as I use a 42' monitor and the resultant white light from the reading pane is like a floodlight on me at night. A half measure they might as well have not bothered to implement. You can also switch to dark mode by applying a dark theme. Having the dark theme with a bright white reading pane is useless. That’s how you can easily turn on dark mode for all apps and Windows taskbar on the entire system level. Log off your account or restart Windows 11 to apply your changes. The DWORD AppsUseLightTheme is used for configuring your default Windows mode, while SystemUsesLightTheme is for configuring your default app mode. When you need to use light mode again, just set their value data to 0. To turn on dark mode completely, just change the value data of both AppsUseLightTheme and SystemUsesLightTheme to 1.If they are not present, you need to create them first. On the right pane, you need to edit the DWORD value for both AppsUseLightTheme and SystemUsesLightTheme. To turn on Dark mode in the Word canvas, select File > Account > Office Theme > Black. Open Registry Editor and navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize.Method 2: Switch to Dark Mode in Windows 11 via Registry Editor If you choose the Custom option, it will let you separately configure light or dark mode for apps (including File Explorer, Settings app) and windows background (taskbar). The ship out near the dock will also rise to the surface of the water. Click on the symbols for the 3 constellations you saw earlier and the model ship will rise in the well. The pillars lining this path each display a symbol in red. Leave the library and go down the path with the well. Return to the library and look up these constellations to find they correspond to the leaf, snake and bug. Press the button and note the constellation that is displayed. Look at the control panel and set the date to Oct 11, 1984, 10:04 AM. Head to the planetarium and turn off the lights (use the switch near the door) then sit down in the chair. Look at the other painting to close the secret passage and open the library door. Climb down and go back down in the elevator. Climb back down, then climb the ladder with the key symbol and you will see a plaque with 3 dates. At the top, climb the ladder with the book symbol to see a view of the ship. Go through the passage and into the elevator, then press the button to go up. Look at the painting nearest to the map and the bookcase will reveal a passage. Turn the tower on the map to face the ship/dock. These correspond to the 4 ages of Myst that you need to visit in any order. If you turn the tower, you will note that it pauses and shows a red beam as it passes over four of the buildings. There is also a flashing building - the tower. Now look at the map hanging on the wall, which shows highlighted buildings corresponding to the marker switches you have flipped. Next look at the blue and red books on the other walls - you will not see anything unless you put the single red page in the red book, and the single blue page in the blue book (and then you will only see very partial messages from the 2 brothers, who want you to bring them more pages). First approach the bookcase directly opposite the entrance, and read the 4 legible books, noting any interesting diagrams you find. Enter the number 08 on this (the number of marker switches on the island), then press the red button, and turn the projector back on to see a message from Atrus. Turn around and approach the note on the wall, then press the green button to reveal a hidden panel. Turn off the dimensional imager using the large button at the bottom. Return to the dock where you started and enter the underground passage. At the end of the path you will see the 8th and final marker switch outside a clock tower, but you cannot reach it yet so ignore it for now. Further along the path find a switch outside a brick building to the right, and a wooden building to the left. Just past the well is another switch to flip. Return to the library and head down the path towards a well. Walk along a narrow path behind the library to a spaceship, and flip a marker switch here. Don't enter here yet, but remember where it is for later. Pick up the note from the ground and read it.Ĭontinue along the path and take the right branch to flip another marker switch, then return to the main path and note the building on the right - the library. Climb part way back down the stairs and turn right to find a path leading to a planetarium. Climb the spiral stairs to the large gears and flip a second marker switch. Walk forward along the dock and you will see the first marker switch (on the right) - flip this and all subsequent switches so they are up. Start by clicking on the book, then on the picture of Myst Island to enter the game. They will appear before a magistrate on Tuesday. Every photograph stores a lot of information that anyone can access when you share a photo through any mode. LibraryThing isn’t going to play my audiobook, nor is Delicious Library. It’s essential that the metadata gets written back to the audio tracks, so that the information about the book travels wherever the book goes. My use case is keeping the actual, digital audiobook files organized, searchable and sortable, and so on. While sites like LibraryThing (or Goodreads, Delicious Library, or whatever) are, I suppose, fine for tracking lists of books, that’s not my use case. The metadata matters, but it’s not the only thing. But I don’t read a lot of material from ebooks.īut my audiobooks collection, starting with Audible in 2003 (!), and growing to include books from, other services I use less frequently, and physical books on CDs and MP3 CDs (storing those is a separate irritation), is thousands of books now. I mostly manage my ebooks in the Finder, and don’t worry too much about the metadata. (There are some supposedly good Windows-based options, another thing the Intel Mac mini will help me explore.)Īgree. I’d be thrilled to see someone build a dedicated audiobook library manager, but the market for that seems…quite small, at least if you limit it to macOS. And do other things that require an Intel processor. I’m in the process of setting up a Mojave VM on a newer (but not M1) Mac mini, which I bought specifically to be able to use with older versions of macOS that couldn’t run on an M1 (M2, etc.) Mac. (Not arguing iTunes isn’t also bloated just that it manages audiobooks very well, and nothing else does.) I simply didn’t try to move my audiobooks to the new laptop, and I continue to maintain my collection on the older machine. I never upgraded it from macOS 10.whatever (Mojave), because I didn’t want to lose all of the things that iTunes does do well. Mojave (and iTunes) is the answer I’ve come to as well.Ĭurrently that’s my previous laptop, an unloved 2016 MacBook Pro that was replaced by an M1 13" MBP. They keep tweeting it and have messed up what was once a very easy system to access books on the device. Bad Apple -PīTW Amazon has made the Kindle app almost unusable. Unfortunately Apple doesn’t want us to have easy access to our information. I’ve been able for years to easily copy and paste my audible books and Kindle books to develop the same table format, then add alphabetical rows (A, B, C, etc) which are then added to a table of contents, duplicate the whole database so I can sort one by author and another by title, then PDF the result. They won’t let one print the list of your purchases, and block every other way, so I used TextSniper to copy the text of the listings - slow work given multiple pages - pasted the result in a Nisus Writer Pro document, cleaned up the results and converted it into a table. Well, I finally found a way to get my (extensive) catalog listing of my books on Apple Books. Though given under the feedback drop-menu “ Which version of Books for Mac are you using?” it only goes up to v1.5 while the latest is v4.4(!), one wonders if anyone cares if they can’t even keep the current versions correct. Consequently, lights and outlets ought to be on separate circuits, so that both of them could run at maximum capacity without overloading the electric system – as a rule, it is always best to maintain the load at utmost 80%. Just keep in mind to check the instructions of each equipment, to be sure that it sustains a 15 amp circuit and it does not require a lower amperage. Whereas a 15 amp circuit is a fit choice for the lighting installations, it cannot cover the energy needed by kitchen appliances, for instance.Īny basic lighting setting is powered by 15 amp electric networks, whether it is a ceiling unit or porch lights. In spite of the fact that practically all the houses have built-in, cost efficient 15 amp receptacles, these outlets are not suitable for all the electrical needs of a modern household. While still built for residential purposes, 20 amp circuits are engineered for high power current.Įven within the field of domestic consumption, there are explicit guidelines for 15 amp vs 20 amp outlet usage. If the two circuits, respectively outlets with the different amperage do not seem too dissimilar so far, there is a clear, and most of the time regulated, distinction when it comes to their use. If you’re unsure which is which, look for a label on the wire. A 15 amp circuit normally includes 14-gauge wires, while 20 amp circuits use 12-gauge or 10-gauge wires. The simplest way to establish the intensity of the household’s electric circuit is to check the breakers and/or fuses in the panel. Large consumers, especially kitchen appliances, such as microwaves, blenders and toasters, need a dedicated 20 amp circuit, to ensure a constant energy flow, which means they cannot share the circuit with other devices. This enables 20 amp plugs to be inserted directly into the outlet. Receptacles with a 20 amp current have a similar design to the 15 amp ones, with a single exception: an additional horizontal slot, which forks from one of the vertical slots. They have two slots and a grounding hole in the form of U as seen in the photo above. Since 15 amp receptacles also work with 20 amp circuits, most of the American houses are built with these. In case you have trouble with installing new devices in your home, the first thing you need to do is check the type of the outlets in the electric network, see if you’re dealing with a 15 amp or 20 amp outlet. Sánchez was showing good contact skills (.286 batting average) but people did expect better from a 24-year-old bonus baby. Yolbert Sánchez started with the Dash as well, and as the Barons review mentioned, he really wasn’t promoted because of his success in High-A. What was expected is that Céspedes hits the ball hard, and often. The plate discipline was not all that impressive even in High-A, but that should be expected for a guy that really hasn’t played since 2018. He had a 127 wRC+ and he only hit two more singles (25) than extra-base hits (27). Céspedes came straight to the Dash, and crushed it. He really had not played regularly since 2018, and even had some visa issues to start 2021 that prevented him from getting on the field right away. The second bucket are the guys that started in Winston-Salem and were promoted, none more famous or highly-regarded than Yoelqui Céspedes. 2 prospect Yoelqui Céspedes clears the fences for the second straight game. He is a toolsy player, and this really was the first year he put some of those tools together over a long stretch of time. The strikeout and walk rates were pretty much the same, though he did strike out more often. Once Mieses was back, the player he was at Kannapolis came with him, for a 117 wRC+. The power was down but he needed to prove he could get on base, and he did, so he got promoted back to W-S. The strikeouts were cut by 10%, as he slashed. Once Mieses was demoted, just about everything clicked. Mieses was striking out too much, and not getting hits at all, with just a. He was even worse than Mendoza to start the year in High-A, with a 41 wRC+. That is nothing new - he has never been a power hitter - but will need to improve on his 4.3% BB-rate to become a prospect to watch.įor Mieses, it was a bit more fun, and he is generally regarded as a White Sox Top 30 prospect. So the batting average improved, but Mendoza still lacks power. He finished there with a 98 wRC+ and a slash line of. He improved in about every respect in Kannapolis - especially batting average - and gained trust again to get back to the Dash. When he was demoted to the Cannon Ballers, Mendoza had a 57 wRC+ with a very low batting average and no power whatsoever. Mendoza’s finish to the season was not as impressive, so let’s start with him. So the true first category features Luis Mieses and Harvin Mendoza, guys who started poorly with the Dash, did very well in Kannapolis, and then returned to Winston-Salem much improved. Former hot prospect Bryce Bush does not fit into any of them because he did not really play this year. There are a few different categories of hitters that these highlighted players fall into. Next season should be better, at least in terms of prospect significance, but it would be pretty difficult to have a worse record than they did this season. They finished the year 43-76, the worst record in High-A. Going into 2021, the Dash were not the team to watch, and besides the mid-year promotions that got Sox fans watching Yoelqui Céspedes and José Rodríguez do their thing, it pretty much stayed that way. Middle schoolers dreaming of becoming marine biologists was so common in my generation that it became a cliché. Surely, if interest from middle school students was the main cause of underrepresentation in MARMAM, we should at least be doing as well as the field of molecular biology (with its core concepts that are much harder to comprehend) in terms of diversity. Phil Clapham pins the crux of the issue on a lack of early exposure to science, yet marine mammals are undeniably charismatic and interesting to the public. Of all the disciplines in biology, ecology and evolution remains a sub-field with especially poor racial diversity (e.g. The expectation of unpaid work in marine mammal science actively discourages bright, passionate, and hardworking students, especially minorities, from reaching their potential and bringing valuable insights to our field. Here, I offer a perspective from a contemporary unpaid worker. I am reaching out in response to Phil Clapham and Paul Dayton, both of whom dismiss critical discussions to reform a system from which they continue to benefit, and who are biased by their interactions with success stories: like Eric Archer suggests, we do not hear from those who had to choose putting food on the table over contributing to a field they love. I have been disheartened by the status quo of unpaid experience in the field for several years. I am an early career scientist from an underrepresented minority who is currently an unpaid intern. I am posting this message on behalf of an ECR who wishes to remain anonymous. If you have thoughts you would like to share directly with the Board please feel free to email me at or contact our Diversity and Inclusion Committee co-chairs at. More information, including ideas for specific actions, will be coming soon. We best serve our community and the animals we study by being open to these discussions, self reflective about our roles and perspectives, and willing to evolve when necessary. This is how our marine mammal society will grow and advance – by asking hard, and oftentimes uncomfortable questions and taking necessary steps to improve. While across our community there may not be 100% agreement on the issues raised in the petition or some of the responses to it, I believe we should thank those who have started the discussion and those who have stepped up to respond. Our intent is for this to happen in mid-August. This will be a moderated online discussion that will be archived for future watching. To that end, we will soon host an online forum with a variety of participants and perspectives on this issue. One thing is certain though: one of the most positive actions we can take is to facilitate this dialog further and include our membership to the greatest extent possible. After this initial process we will work with our membership to find what action by the SMM is in our purview and could address this issue in a meaningful and responsible way. The Board is reviewing the online discussion and available literature, reaching out to a broader cohort of our community, and looking across other professional societies to see if and how they have addressed similar concerns. The SMM has just received the petition, and it will feed into the Board’s ongoing deliberations on this important and multifarious issue. This is an issue of “and” not “or” – it is both unpaid internships AND lack of access in early education (and so much more) that contribute to the struggle to achieve greater diversity in our field. Thankfully, the discussion has continued to grow in nuance with greater acknowledgment that the pipeline is broken in many places and each spot needs focused attention. The initial dialog on internships quickly moved to two perspectives: one being that unpaid internships were the barrier that needed addressing, and the other that a focus on underrepresented groups throughout the marine mammal science career pipeline was the necessary action. The challenge we face is finding agreement on what the ‘right’ course of action should be and which action should come first. We all agree that barriers to diversity and inclusiveness, where they exist, should be dismantled. At the core we all agree that our marine mammal community, and science in general, benefits from increased diversity. It is encouraging to see ongoing dialogue and the evolution of various positions as more voices and perspectives engage on the issue. I wanted to put out a quick update on behalf of the Society for Marine Mammalogy Board regarding the petition related to unpaid internships and the subsequent discussion on MARMAM and beyond.
